Major Winter Storm; Schools Close; Health Risks

A major winter storm is rolling up the coast. After the first round of snow overnight, the snow will intensify through the afternoon today with heavy accumulation tonight into Tuesday. Snowfall will pile up at a couple of inches per hour and create whiteout conditions with strong winds blowing and drifting snow before it tapers off Tuesday afternoon. We have a long way to go.

Schools in Philadelphia closed early ahead of a major coastal storm that's expected to bring 12-16 inches of snow to the region. Public and Catholic schools in Philly dismissed at noon today, with the Winter Storm Warning in effect. About 200 flights in and out of Philadelphia were already cancelled as of 6 a.m. today. A blizzard warning with forecasts of 18-24 inches extends from the New Jersey coast, through New York City and New England.

Major storms can bring major health risks. Even those in good shape put unusual strain on their body when they go out into cold weather and shovel. Doctors advise those who choose to battle the blizzard â€“ , bend at the knees to get closer to the snow and stand up, reducing the strain on your back; take frequent breaks; and if possible in long storms like this one, donâ€™t wait until it stops snowing. Shoveling a few inches at a time is easier than deep snow.
