Tom Wolf Inaugurated as Governor; Union Boss Convicted of Racketeering; DE Mom Robs Wawa, Takes Cab

Democrat Tom Wolf was sworn in this afternoon as the 47th Governor of the state of Pennsylvania in front of a crowd of a few thousand outside the Capitol building in Harrisburg. Wolf, a political outsider, spent $10 million of his own money on his campaign to unseat the Republican incumbent Tom Corbett. In his inauguration speech, Wolf called himself "an unconventional leader," perhaps the first governor to operate a forklift and manage a hardware store. Wolf ran his family business for decades. He laid out his goals simply as creating jobs that pay, equalizing eduction in public schools, and providing "a government that works." The inauguration was interrupted by several anti-fracking protestors chanting, "Ban fracking now!" Two people were led out by police. Dozens more demonstrators continued the protest outside. Eight people were arrested for disorderly conduct.

Former Philadelphia union boss Joseph Dougherty was convicted of all counts in a federal racketeering case that involved intimidation, vandalism, and extortion. The federal jury deliberated for five days but found the 73-year-old guilty on all six counts including corruption and arson. Dougherty was accused of ordering Ironworkers Local 401 members to put in 'night work' destroying the construction sites of nonunion contractors as a means of intimidation for not using union labor. About a dozen union members had pled guilty in the case and testified against him. The defense claimed the men were cooperating with authorities to save themselves and his client had nothing to do with their crimes, but prosecutors had secretly recorded audio tapes of Dougherty discussing and praising the tactics. Dougherty faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison. He was taken into custody pending sentencing.

A Wilmington, DE, woman has been arrested after taking a cab to and from a convenience store robbery and bringing her 1-year-old daughter along for the ride. It happened around 3:25 a.m. at the Wawa at 705 Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington. 29-year-old Amanda Paoletti told the clerk she had a gun and demanded money. After getting the cash, she returned to a yellow minivan cab she had waiting outside with her daughter inside. Delaware State Police were able to track the cab and driver to the Wilmington train station. He apparently had no idea what happened inside the Wawa and gave troopers the address on the 100 block of Ashton Street in Wilmington where he had dropped off Paoletti. Police responded to the location and arrested her. The homeowner (who was in the cab with the child) also had no idea about the robbery. Paoletti is charged with Robbery First Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a child, Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She is currently being held at Delores Baylor Womenâ€™s Correctional Institute in lieu of $8,000 bail.
