Thousands marched today in Philadelphia on Martin Luther King day. The event was organized by a group called MLK Day of Action, Resistance, and Empowerment or 'MLK Dare'. The march started on North Broad Street outside the headquarters of the Philadelphia School District and headed south around City Hall. The protestors marched down Market Street to a rally at Independence Hall around 3:30 pm. Protestors were calling for action on numerous issues related to social justice, education, and jobs. The main issues centered around a $15 city-wide minimum wage, a fair funding formula for public schools, an elected school board to replace the School Reform Commission, and an end to stop-and-frisk by the Philadelphia Police. The march was peaceful and attracted people of all backgrounds, ages, and races.

Today was the 20th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martini Luther King Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the country. An estimated 135,000 people around the area volunteered their time for some 1,800 registered service projects. 5,000 volunteers were at Girard College alone (adults and children), working on a variety projects. Many of them were related to promoting voter participation and empowerment in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act outlawing voter racial discrimination.
