Winter Weather Advisory, L&I Watchdog, Taken 3 Tops Box Office

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect until 10am in the city and nearby suburbs. The rain will freeze on contact through the morning hours, especially in areas to the north and west of Philadelphia where temperatures didn't make it much past freezing yesterday. The good news is that we're not expecting the precipitation to be extremely heavy, but the bad news is that it doesn't take much ice to cause dangerous conditions. You'll want to be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, sidewalks and any other untreated surfaces. With temperatures rising into the upper 30’s this afternoon, the icy mix will eventually transition to plain rain, but expect slick winter conditions through the course of the morning commute around the city, and possibly lasting into the afternoon as you head north.

Philadelphia’s beleaguered Department of Licenses and Inspections has a new watchdog — a result of changes made in the wake of the 2013 Market Street building collapse. The building collapse resulted in a task force that sent 37 recommendations to the mayor last fall. Now Mayor Nutter has created an oversight board to make sure that L&I actually follows through on those recommendations. The mayor, of course, has just one year left in office , so the oversight board creates the formal structure that will ensure the next mayor’s L&I chief follows through as well, if any of these recommendations remain unfulfilled come 2016.

Taken 3, the action-thriller sequel starring Liam Neeson, finished first at the box office by earning an estimated $40-million on its weekend debut. That put it well ahead of the runner-up drama, Selma, the new Martin Luther King drama, which took in $11-million, slightly more than the holdover third-place finisher, Into the Woods, which earned $10-million. The leader of the last two weekends, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, fell to fourth with $9-million. And rounding out the top five was Unbroken, with $8–million. Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly down compared to a year ago.

Packers 26 Cowboys 21

Patriots 35 Ravens 31
Seahawks 31 Panthers 17
