31-year-old Jillian Tait and 23-year-old Gary Fellenbaum were arraigned on Wednesday morning for the beating and torture death of three-year-old Scotty McMillan, Tait's son. The couple beat the child with their fists, a homemade whip, a metal rod, hit head head against a wall, and hung him upside down by his feet. The abuse lasted three days before the boy died. The two did not say a word in court today as their lawyers entered pleas of not guilty. The prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty if convicted because of the aggravating factors of torture and the victim's age. A couple of dozen people gathered outside the Chester County Justice Center to demonstrate and raise awareness about child abuse.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health is warning the public about the potential exposure to measles in Delaware and Philadelphia counties. They say that a person who most likely has the measles may have exposed others to the viral disease at the CVS Pharmacy at 316 E. Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, Pa. on Sunday, Dec. 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and the Please Touch Museum, Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, 4321 Avenue of the Republic, in Philadelphia on Monday, December 29, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Officials say that the MMR vaccine is highly effective but anyone who was exposed might be at risk if they are:
Infants less than one year of age who are too young to have received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine;
Individuals who were vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine, which was used from 1963 through 1967, and have not been revaccinated;
Individuals born after 1957 who have only received one dose of MMR vaccine;
Individuals who refused vaccination;
Individuals from parts of the world where there is low vaccination coverage or circulating measles.
Symptoms don't start until one to two weeks after exposure with runny nose, watery eyes, cough and a high fever. After four days a red rash appears lasting four to seven days. People can spread the virus 4 days before to 4 days after the rash. The MMR vaccine can prevent infection if given within three days of exposure, otherwise a dose of immune globulin can provide protection. It doesn't hurt to get another dose of the vaccine if you already have been vaccinated. If you want to receive MMR or immune globulin, ask your healthcare provider or contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.
Philadelphia Police and the District Attorney held a briefing today at Police headquarters to remind everyone to have a happy and safe New Year celebration. Specifically, don't shoot off guns to ring in the new year. “There is zero tolerance for people shooting firearms into the air to ‘celebrate’ the holiday,†noted Philadelphia district attorney Seth Williams. “It’s a stupid act that can have deadly consequences, and there is nothing festive about it.†It is pretty simple, what goes up must comes down and when bullets come back down they do damage. 27-year-old Joe Jaskolka was at the press conference today. Jaskolka was hit in the head by a falling bullet on December 31, 1998 when he was only 11 years old and is now paralyzed on his right side. The DA warns that anyone caught firing their gun off tonight will be charged with recklessly endangering another person. If a bullet hits someone, they could be charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder, or even murder. Celebrate responsibly.
