Teen Curfew Begins in Philadelphia and will be Enforced

Beginning tonight at 9 pm the extended earlier curfew for teens 18 and under took effect in Center City and University City. Additional police patrol on foot, bike, and mount will be on patrol to enforce and pick up violators.

This new curfew is all in an effort by Chief Ramsey's police force to curb the teen mobs that have become an increasing problem for businesses and the public at large. The hope is to help reduce the random violence and vandalism that pops up with these mobs and to keep the teens out of trouble. Most of those involved have been between 14-16 years old but some have been as young as 11.

The curfew applies to Center City from Bainbridge Street to Vine Street and from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River. In University City the borders are between 38th and 43rd streets and Market Street to Baltimore Avenue.

Curfews are not new to Philadelphia. The entire city already has a midnight curfew for those 18 and under and 10:30 for those under 12. This new curfew just cuts the time down in those areas that have been highly affected by the senseless mob attacks.

Police say that they will use some discretion when enforcing the curfew, for example, it is easy to tell the difference between a teen on his way home from a job or on a errand for milk as opposed to just hanging out, however it is best not to test the curfew. First time violators will probably get a warning, however second time violators could get a $500 fine.

All violators will be taken to either Third District headquarters in the 1300 block of South 11th Street, or the Sixth District, in the 200 block of North 11th Street. They will also need to be picked up by parents.

The city's 20 recreation centers will be adding extra programming and staff be open later to 10pm to give teens a place to go and something to do.

The biggest point made by all (city officials, police, teens, parents) is that this problem is being proliferated by a small minority of teens that are causing everyone a lot of trouble, and that everyone just wants it to stop so they could go about their lives again.
