Penn President in Die-In; Post-Sandy Heart Attacks; Health Care Deadline

University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann participated in a "die-in" protest at a holiday party in her home and the Penn police force is criticizing her actions. Gutmann (pictured) laid on the floor with student protesters when they took over her holiday party this week, symbolizing the Michael Brown shooting by police in Ferguson, Missouri. Members of the Penn police force who were working at the party and witnessed Gutmann's participation were "outraged," said Eric Rohrback, president of the Penn police officers' union. Rohrback said he was "appalled that the president of this fine university would give in to the pressures of the uninformed mob mentality." Rohrback called it a "slap in the face to every person that wears this uniform and serves this university."

According to a new study, the number of heart attacks and strokes increased in New Jersey just after Hurricane Sandy. Rutgers University researchers compared heart attacks and strokes and the deaths they caused in the two weeks after the storm with the same period in five previous years. They found a 22 percent increase in heart attacks and a 31 percent higher death rate for those patients within a month of being stricken. The study says roadblocks may have caused delays in treatment and evacuations may also have caused people to skip taking medicine and alter diets.

Open enrollment continues at healthcare.gov through February 15, but Monday is the deadline for getting coverage that begins with the new year. More than 660,000 new subscribers have chosen a health plan since enrollment opened in November and theyâ€™ll be covered when the year changes. Experts also encourage current subscribers to go back online and make sure their plans still work for them. There are more insurers and more options this year.
