Manayunk Vandalism Arrest; Hatboro Ricin Guilty Plea; NJ Worker Stabbed 21 Times

The suspect wanted in connection with the vandalism on Manayunk's new Venice Island Park has turned himself into police. Northwest Detective Division received an anonymous tip over the weekend identifying the teenager in the surveillance video. The 15-year-old was charged with criminal mischief. The video showed two suspects loitering in the park. One of them started destroying lights around the performing arts center. He kicked over around a half-dozen decorative light and pulled out a strip of LED lights from a handrail. The damage was estimated to cost $20-30,000.

Today, 19-year-old Nicholas Helman of Hatboro plead guilty in Bucks County Court to attempted murder, attempted aggravated assault, risking a catastrophe and other crimes. Last March, he sent a birthday card containing the deadly poison ricin to his ex-girlfriend's new romantic interest. Hazmat crews also found more of the poison at his home on the 100 block of Byberry Road in Hatboro. Prosecutors have now filed new charges against Helman. While incarcerated in Bucks County he wrote a letter threatening to kidnap, torture, burn down the houses of, and kill the prosecutor, witnesses, and detective on the case. He has now been charged with solicitation of murder, terroristic threats, and related offenses.

A New Jersey social worker was stabbed 21 times this afternoon inside the Department of Children and Families in Camden. It happened around 1:30 pm on the 100 block of Haddon Avenue at the Child Protection and Permanency Agency. The victim, a woman in her 30's, was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where she underwent surgery and is on life support. The attacker fled the building, but police did catch up with the suspect and have them in custody. The suspect was a client in her 30's that has a history of violence and mental illness. The names of the victim and suspect have not been released at this time. A motive is also not known.
