Trooper Killer Eric Frein Captured; Hate Crimes Bill Passes Council; Senator's Husband Steals Signs

Suspected trooper killer Eric Frein, 31, was captured Thursday afternoon inside a hanger at Pocono Mountain Municipal Airport north of Tannersville, PA. He surrendered to police without incident, no shots were fired. He is charged with the deadly shooting of Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounding of Trooper Alex Douglass outside the state police barracks in Blooming Grove on September 12th. Hundreds of law enforcement officials have been scouring the thick woods in northeastern Pennsylvania over the past 48 days in search of the fugitive. During their search authorities discovered numerous items believed to be Frein's such as a journal, Serbian cigarettes, pipe bombs, soiled diapers, and a rifle with ammunition. At times they believed they spotted him at a distance but the rugged terrain and dense brush prevented them from following him further. Trooper Douglass is still recovering.

Barrett Township in Monroe County had canceled Halloween trick-or-treating due to the ongoing manhunt for Frein in the woods surrounding the town. Township supervisors now say that children can go out Friday night and enjoy Halloween festivities as usual. The Halloween parade on Saturday is still cancelled.



Philadelphia City Council approved a bill that would add penalties for gender identity and sexual orientation based hate crimes that aren't covered in Pennsylvania state law. The bill pass unanimously and has the support of the Nutter administration who has two weeks to sign it. The bill was proposed after last month's assault on a gay couple in Center City by a large group of men and women brought to light the disparity in the state's hate crime laws regarding sexual orientation. Prosecutors could not charge the attackers with a hate crime because gender identity and sexual orientation had been removed from state hate crimes laws by the PA Supreme Court in 2008 because of a legal technicality. They have yet to be added back.


The husband of a Delaware state senator turned himself in Thursday morning after campaign workers for his wife's rival caught him on camera stealing campaign signs. 54-year-old Dana Armon Long turned himself into Middletown Police at 7 a.m. today. He is married to Democratic Senator Bethany Hall-Long. Republican campaign workers placed their candidate's signs at Delaware 299 near Rt. 1 on three different occasions. They were stolen each time so they decided to surveil the area. The workers caught and confronted a man on video, later identified as Long, stealing the signs at 4 a.m. Wednesday. They turned the video (see below) over to authorities who issued an arrest warrant.

State Senator Hall-Long issued the following statement regarding the incident:
My husband is the man depicted in the video. The video shows him removing a handful of signs this morning. He turned them over to the Democratic Party and asked that they be returned to the Republican Party about six hours after they were taken up. Sadly, this race has become tough and personal. My husband is my high school sweetheart and he loves me very much. I was not aware that he had allowed his frustration over the campaign attacks to get the better of him. Of course I'm disappointed and wish that it had not happened. The Republican Party is threatening legal action, and so I will withhold further comment on the incident. I will continue to focus my energy on the challenges that confront my district, and the State of Delaware.
