Justice Seamus McCaffery Resigns; Palmer Charter High Closes; Council Nixes PGW/UIL Deal

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffery stepped down from the bench Monday after 8 years on the state's high court amid a porn e-mail scandal. He sent a letter of resignation to the governor effective immediately. The Judicial Conduct Board has dropped its investigation into McCaffery following disclosure that he had sent over 200 e-mails containing sexually explicit material to state employees between 2008 and 2012. His colleagues on the bench issued a three-line order vacating their order from last week, meaning he will not retire under suspension. McCaffery has agreed not to seek senior judge status or seek elective judicial office again.

Students at one Philadelphia high school arrived this morning only to be turned away at the door. Walter D Palmer Leadership Learning Partners Charter School in Frankford abruptly closed it's high school on Monday. Some students say they received a robocall on Sunday night but many others heard nothing and came to school as normal Monday morning. An emergency meeting is scheduled for 6 pm Monday. Palmer Charter enrolled hundreds of students above the school districts cap. 1300 students attended the K-12 school, well over the 675 students the district would reimburse. A lottery was held recently to reduce the number of elementary students, and 250 were forced to find a new school. The school district knew that a closure of the high school was a possibility but were also surprised by today's events. Palmer and the District plan to help students find a new high school.

Philadelphia City Council president Darrel Clarke notified Mayor Nutter that the council will not be endorsing the privatization of the Philadelphia Gas Works. The proposed sale of PGW to UIL Holdings in Connecticut was for $1.86 billion. UIL has been waiting on council's decision since at least mid-July (when it could first opt-out), for the deal to proceed. Council was waiting to review reports by their own consultants on the proposed deal. Mayor Nutter had said that 25% of the proceeds from this sale would have be used to shore up the city workers' pension fund.
