Justice McCaffery Suspended; Wilmington Children Fight Video; Court Blocks SRC Teacher changes

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has suspended Justice Seamus McCaffery after it was revealed he had used a private account to send emails containing pornographic materials to state employees. The order released today said the suspension will be on an interim basis with pay. The Judicial Conduct Board will have to determine if there is probable cause to file formal charges within 30 days. The board had already launched an investigation, but Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille believed it was moving too slow, hence the call to the court to take action. Castille and McCaffery are well-known, long-time rivals and the acrimony is only mounting after this action by the court. Justice Debra McCloskey Todd did include a dissenting statement, taking into account the bad blood, saying this was better left to the Judicial Conduct Board. She says, "Even a justice is entitled to due process."

Wilmington Police are investigating a disturbing incident that was posted on social media. The video shows two boys, believed to be between four and seven, engaged in a brutal fight on a sidewalk. They were wrestling and violently punching and kicking each other. Instead of breaking up the fight, the adults were just watching, laughing, and egging them on. Of course of one them recorded this brawl and posted it to the internet. Police are trying to identify the adults. A Common Pleas Court judge has temporarily blocked the Philadelphia School District's plan to impose terms on teacher's health-care benefits which effectively canceled the union contract of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. Judge Nina Wright Padilla granted the preliminary injunction sought by the PFT after the School Reform Commission voted to implement the changes on October 6th. The SRC sought to have teachers contribute 10-13% to their health care plan which they currently receive for free. That would have freed up $44 million that the district would funnel back into schools for supplies, nurses, and counselors. The injunction will keep the SRC from implementing the change until the courts can determine if the SRC had legal grounds to do so.
