Donut Robbery w/ Needle on Video; Rally for Hate Crime Laws; ex-Principals Charged Cheating PSSA

Philadelphia Police are searching for a suspect who used a hypodermic needle to rob a donut shop in Old City on Sunday. It happened at the at the Dunkinâ€™ Donuts in the 800 block of Chestnut Street just before 7 a.m. on September 21st. The entire incident was captured on surveillance video. The suspect demanded money from the employees. He went behind the counter and grabbed one of them by the arm and threatened to stab her with the needle if she did not open the register or if they called the police. Eventually, after struggling with employees he opened it himself and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as as a 30-year-old white male, 5'8 to 5'9, thin to medium build. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with logos on the front and back, black Adidas sweatpants with white colored tri-stripes down the sides of both legs, and bright yellow or green colored sneakers. No one was injured.

A couple of hundred people gathered this afternoon in LOVE Park for a rally to support of changes in the state's hate-crimes laws. Currently, crimes motivated because of a person's sexual orientation are not considered hate-crimes in Pennsylvania. The rally was spurned on by the incident on September 11th where a same sex couple was attacked in Center City by a group of young adults presumably because they were gay. Many lawmakers and community leaders come out to and spoke today including PA Rep. Brian Sims, DA Seth Williams, and PA Sen. Larry Farnes. Philadelphia Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown has introduced a proposal that would make crimes motivated by a victimâ€™s sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability considered hate crimes in the city. State lawmakers are working on similar measures but the current fall session ends soon.

Two former Philadelphia School District principals have been arrested for changing answers on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) test to improve test scores. Barbara McCreery, formerly of Communications Technology High School, and Arthur "Larry" Melton, formerly of Edward W. Bok Technical High School, are charged with one count each of tampering with public records or information, forgery, and tampering with records or identification. They were the latest caught in an ongoing investigation by the Attorney General's office into widespread cheating on standardized tests throughout the state. The two defendants each made an answer key and systematically changed wrong answers to correct ones. Principals and schools are evaluated by these test scores and measurements like Adequate Yearly Progress. The year they stopped manipulating tests, scores took a big tumble. Now seven educators in the Philadelphia School District have been charged in the cheating scandal.
