Einstein Shooter Suspect ID'd; Charges in CC Gay Attack; Philly Cigarette Tax Passes

Philadelphia Police have identified the suspect who shot and killed a 15-year-old girl and injured a 19-year-old man outside of Einstein Hospital yesterday. They are looking for 19-year-old Darian Person of the 1900 block of Rowan Street. A large group of teens from Delaware Valley Charter High School gathered at the SEPTA Transportation Center at Broad and Olney for a scheduled fight Monday afternoon. Police broke up the fight but the group moved south to Old York and Tabor Roads where the fighting started again. Some of the kids brought in â€œmuscleâ€ from the neighborhood to help in the fight, including Person. Person pulled his gun and fired 3-5 shots. One hit and killed 15-year-old Aisha Abdur-Rhaman. Two other shots hit a 19-year-old male who is in critical condition. Person should be considered armed and dangerous. There is a $20,000 reward. Anyone with information should contact Philadelphia Police.

BREAKING 7:05 pm: Suspect Darian Person surrendered to homicide detectives.

The Philadelphia District Attorney announced charges against three people (2 men, 1 woman) in the Center City attack on two gay men on September 11th. 24-year-old Philip Williams, 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan and 24-year-old Katherine Knott each face two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of criminal conspiracy. They will not face hate crime charges because Pennsylvania does not have that legislature based on sexual orientation. The incident happened on the 1600 block of Chancellor street around 10:45 pm when a group of 10-12 individuals confronted the same-sex couple. The attack sent the two men to the hospital, leaving one with a wired jaw. Citizens on social media helped police identify suspects from surveillance video. Defense attorneys say that it was a mutual confrontation, not a one way attack. â€œI would like to thank the police for their thorough investigation and the public for the outpouring of information and tips in this case,â€ said DA Seth Williams. â€œThis vicious attack shocked the entire country. An assault on people because of their sexual orientation has no place in Philadelphia.â€

The $2-per-pack cigarette tax has passed both the House (114 to 84) and the PA Senate (39 to 11). The bill will now go to the desk of Governor Tom Corbett who is expected to sign the measure. This is expected to provide tens of millions of dollars of 'new' money to the Philadelphia School District that is operating at a budget deficit of around $81 million. Superintendent Hite was able to open schools on time by cutting back on services such as transportation and janitorial. The district had hoped the bill would have passed months ago but it stalled after the Senate added provisions that included local hotel taxes and a small-city economic development program. This version only has the Philadelphia cigarette tax. The tax would only be levied within city limits. I'm sure they did their studies but the extra $2 could change smoker's habits in ways that would take away from the gains. 1) Buy in suburbs. 2) Quit 3) Smoke less. Enough people will probably just pony up the $2.
