Council Rock Teens die in SUV Crash; Made in America Singin' in the Rain; Showboat Casino/HOB Closed

Three sophomores at Council Rock High School South in Bucks County were killed this weekend in a SUV crash in the Poconos. The crash occurred on Saturday morning in Paupack Township near Lake Wallenpaupack in Wayne County about 70 miles north of Philadelphia. There were 6 juveniles inside the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban when it overturned on a country road. The three boys have been identified as Ryan Lesher, Shamus Digney, and Cullen Keffer. They were all involved in athletics and were about to start their second year. The school, located in Holland, PA, will open on Labor Day Monday from 1-4pm with grief counseling available. The school year starts on Tuesday.

Mark J. Klein, the Superintendent for Council Rock School District, released the following statement:
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the deaths of three sophomores from Council Rock High School South. They were involved in a terrible automobile accident, yesterday, in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Council Rock offers its sincere condolences to the families of these students and to all who are grieving this terrible loss.

To allow for our school community to grieve, Council Rock High School South will be open for students and families beginning tomorrow at 1:00 PM and extending to 4:00 PM. Counselors will be available for students and parents to offer support and guidance.

We ask for your thoughts and prayers for our students and their families.

The third year of Jay Z's Made in America festival finished up Sunday night after navigating an uncontrollable speed bump dropped by Mother Nature. At about 6:15pm, the City of Philadelphia, Roc Nation, and Live Nation decided to evacuate the concert area so everyone could take shelter due to an incoming severe thunderstorm with lightning. After the rains and thunder swept through, the gates were opened again and ticket holders were allowed back in at 7:15pm. Spoon retook the stage at 7:45 and the performance schedule was readjusted, pushing the curfew back to midnight to accommodate the delay. In all, some 80,000 music fans descended on the Parkway for the 2-day event. The event benefits the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and United Way of Lancaster County. Philadelphia received $300,000 this year for their Impact fund and Lancaster received $100,000.

The Showboat Casino Hotel has now closed along the Atlantic City Boardwalk after 27 years. It is the first of three casinos closing in the resort two in the next two weeks that is feeling the pressure from gaming competition in neighboring states. Showboat-owner Caesars Entertainment also owns and operates Caesars, Harrah's and Bally's in Atlantic City. Last week, Caesars Entertainment CEO Gary Loveman said that 470 of Showboat's 2000 employees accepted jobs within the company mostly at the other AC properties. Music fans are lamenting the loss of the House of Blues, one the the shore's best sounding performance spaces. It was also a medium sized room with character that usually attracted an impressive lineup of acts.
