NE Phila $70k Shopping Center Theft, PA Medicaid Expansion, Philadelphia Fire Medic System Upgrades

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man was shot and $70,000 was taken in the parking lot of a shopping center in Northeast Philadelphia. A 37-year-old male was robbed when he pulled into the parking lot. Police say he was shot once in the arm. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police are searching for two male suspects wearing masks, last seen in a white van, possibly a Dodge Caravan, driving south through the parking lot towards Cottman Avenue.

A half-million more low-income Pennsylvanians are in line to get federally funded health insurance after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services approved the stateâ€™s plan to accept Medicaid expansion money under the landmark 2010 federal health care law, officials said Thursday. The Corbett administration said the federal agency approved a plan that lets private insurers administer Medicaid-funded coverage that adheres to Medicaidâ€™s existing rules. The plan vastly expands a Medicaid program that already covers 2.2 million adults and children in Pennsylvania. Enrollment in the plan, named Healthy Pennsylvania, is expected to begin Dec. 1 with coverage to start the following Jan. 1.

Philadelphia officials now say improvements to the fire departmentâ€™s medic system, first implemented 100 days ago, are working, making more units available to those needing help. Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says the first of 25 new medic units, replacing half of the departmentâ€™s aging fleet by the end of the year, is now on the streets. Officials say the Fire Department invested $1.3 million to improve medic unit availability and another $6 million to replace the older medic units. Philadelphia medics answer more than 300,000 calls for help each year.
