Bus and Truck Crash on 611 MontCo; DC 33 and City Reach Deal; Man Shoots Truck Thief

Police say 21 people were injured when a SEPTA bus and a Pepsi truck collided along 611 in Montgomery County this afternoon. The Pepsi truck rear-ended the inbound Route 55 SEPTA bus near Old York Road and Meetinghouse Road in Cheltenham at around 3:45 p.m. The bus was headed towards Olney from the Willow Grove/Doylestown area. Most of the injuries to passengers on the bus were minor but the driver of the truck was not wearing a seatbelt and hit his head on the windshield. Those injured were taken to various area hospitals to be evaluated. There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

After years of negotiations, the City of Philadelphia and its largest municipal workersâ€™ union, District Council 33, have reached a tentative agreement. Mayor Nutter signed the agreement on Friday. DC 33 president Pete Matthews expects an overwhelming positive vote on this contract. Members have two weeks to complete the mail-in vote. AFSCME DC33 represents about 10,000 current and retired blue-collar city employees, including streets and sanitation workers. This deal includes wage increases of 3.5 percent this year, 2.5 percent next year plus a lump sum of $2,800 for every member but no retroactive pay. Employee contributions to pensions will increase; the city will make a lump sum $20 million payment. The city will be able to use temporary layoffs during an economic crisis. This deal closes a 5-year negotiation where workers have been without a contract since 2009. They'll have to go back to the tables in June 2016 to work out the next deal.

There have not been any charges filed and a decision may not come until next week if there will be legal action against a 56-year-old Frankford man who shot and killed a 30-year-old man who he thought was breaking into his truck. It happened last night around 10 p.m. in the 4500 block of Torresdale Avenue. The man saw the suspect on his surveillance camera engaged in suspicious activity near his truck parked behind his home. He came out to confront him and ended up shooting the suspect. He then waited for police to arrive, handed over his revolver, and explained what happened. Investigators are still gathering evidence in the case and watching surveillance video, etc. The District Attorney's office will have to weigh all evidence against Pennsylvania's â€œCastle Doctrineâ€ which permits deadly force in and around your home if your safety is threatened by an intruder.
