For the first time ever, little leaguers from Center City Philadelphia steal the spotlight in Williamsport. And thousands came out to welcome the Taney Dragons to the home of the Little League World Series on Wednesday evening. As the first urban Philadelphia team to make it to Williamsport, they've proven that even with few resources success is possible. In their Mid-Atlantic champ uniforms the Dragons took some of their first cuts in the Williamsport batting cages Wednesday. And for the Taney Dragons, they say some of their favorite moments of the tournament so far have been meeting kids and coaches from all around the world. The Dragons take on South Nashville LL (Nashville, Tennessee) in the Opening Round on Friday at 3PM on ESPN. There will be a pep rally held at City Hall in Philadelphia on Friday at 2PM followed by the game on a big screen in the courtyard. Little League World Series schedule

It was a day of honor and celebration for a decorated World War II veteran in our area. Staff Sergeant Warner Cryder turned 100-years-old Wednesday. Cryder was born in Malden, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, served during World War II, and earned two Bronze Star medals. After receiving an honorable discharge, Cryder began his employment with Woolworth which led to a sixty year career in the variety store business — including owning three stores in Philadelphia. The staff at his senior living community threw him a birthday party Wednesday afternoon where he celebrated the milestone with his family and friends.

A SEPTA spokesperson says SEPTA and the Regional Rail electrical workers union have reached a tentative contract agreement. The deal still has to be ratified by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), which represents more than 200 employees. As for the Regional Rail engineers, a SEPTA spokesperson says they are “narrowing the differences.” SEPTA officials say they will be holding a special board meeting Monday morning where Chairman Pat Deon will be able to sign a contract. The SEPTA spokesperson says if the deal goes through, the electrical workers get an 11.5 percent raise after the dispute has been going on for four years.

Weather, August 14
