Carjacker's Mother Turns Down Reward; NTSB Paulsboro Report; Megan's Law 20 Years Old

The mother of one of the accused carjackers charged with murdering three children by running them over in a stolen SUV last week was offered the $110,000 reward but turned it down. Police credit 19-year-old Jonathan Rosa's mother with cracking the case and ultimately helping them bring in both suspects. Police initially questioned Rosa on Saturday because they found his cell phone at the scene. He said it had been stolen and since he didn't have a record they let him go. His mother, knowing the police questioned him, talked to him and eventually convinced him to turn himself in on Sunday. After Rosa was in custody Police were able to get information from him to find the other suspect Cornelius Crawford. Rosa's mother apparently doesn't want anything to do with the money. Officials will have to determine who else might get the reward. The two in custody were denied bail today.

The National Transportation Safety Board issued its final report in regards to the November, 30th 2012 train derailment and vinyl choride leak in Paulsboro, NJ that sickened residents and forced evacuations. The board faulted the train operator for actions leading up to the crash and local officials for their response to the accident. Conrail did not heed a consultant's advice in the weeks prior that the bridge was problematic and should stay still. The dispatcher should not have allowed the train to proceed through the 'red' light. The conductor who performed the visual inspection was not properly trained to examine the bridge lock. After the accident, emergency crews did not have a proper emergency protocol in place to effectively protect the community and themselves from exposure resulting in both responders and citizens getting ill. The NTSB has issued a list of 20 recommendations for improvements in rules, training, and communications.

20 years ago today, 7-year-old Megan Kanka went missing in her neighborhood of Hamilton Township, NJ. In less than 24 hours she was found, killed by a convicted sex offender, Jesse Timmendequas, who lured her across the street with the promise of a puppy. Her body was placed in a box and dumped in a local park. This heartbreaking crime was the impetus for the creation of â€œMegan's Lawâ€ which requires all convicted sex offenders to register when moving into a neighborhood. Timmendequas and two roommates were all sex offenders, and no one knew.
