3 Children Killed in Carjack Hit-n-Run; Delco DA to File Charges; Pope Visit Willingness/No Confirm

Three children were killed and two others were injured when a carjacked vehicle plowed into a crowd of people in North Philadelphia this morning. The crash happened around 11:15 am at the intersection of Germantown Avenue and West Allegheny. It began at 6th and Huntingdon when a woman was forced into the backseat of her white Toyota SUV by two men at gunpoint. The vehicle ran a red light, lost control, jumped a curb and hit the group of people manning a fruit stand. One child, a 10-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene. His siblings, a 15-year-old sister and their 7-year-old brother died at the hospital. Two adults were also taken to the hospital, the children's mother and the carjacking victim. The children would come to the fruit stand to sell produce from the community garden every Friday. The two carjackers fled on foot after the crash.

SUSPECT #1: Described as a black male wearing a white t-shirt and basketball shorts.
SUSPECT #2: Described as a Hispanic male wearing an orange shirt and basketball shorts.

There is now a $110,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of these suspects.

The Delaware County District Attorney's office plans to file charges against 49-year-old Richard Plotts in the shooting of mental health case worker Theresa Hunt yesterday at Mercy Wellness Center in Darby. Plotts will be charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, attempted murder, and related charges. Plotts shot Hunt point blank in the head before taking shots at psychiatrist Dr. Lee Silverman. Silverman was carrying his own licensed .32-calibre semiautomatic handgun, against building policy, and returned fire against Plotts hitting him multiple times. Plotts was carrying an additional 39 bullets on him. DA Jack Whelan believes Plotts was going to reload and continue shooting, and it was fortunate that Silverman was armed and stopped him. While motive is still unknown, authorities speculate that Plotts was unhappy with the building's â€œNo Weaponsâ€ policy.

The Pope is coming to Philadelphia! Well probably, but not officially, and he definitely doesn't have an airplane ticket yet. His iPad can only schedule things 6 months out anyway so anything said before next March doesn't really count as concrete. The committee for the World Meeting of Families is putting things together like he'll be here in September 2015. The one new piece of information on the Philly Pope Watch was the Vatican did say Pope Francis did express his â€œwillingness to participate.â€ It is more likely than not he will pay us a visit, and that will almost double the attendance from 500,000-800,000 to over 1,000,000 attendees.

Archdiocese of Philadelphia statement
"There has been no official confirmation by the Vatican or The Holy See of Pope Francis' attendance at the 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. We still expect that any official confirmation will come approximately six months prior to the event.

Archbishop Chaput has frequently shared his confidence in Pope Francis' attendance at the World Meeting and his personal conversations with the Holy Father are the foundation for that confidence.

We are further heartened and excited by the comments of the Vatican Press Office regarding Pope Francis' "willingness to participate in the World Meeting of Families." While Archbishop Chaput's comments do not serve as official confirmation, they do serve to bolster our sincere hope that Philadelphia will welcome Pope Francis next September."
