Sheraton Center City Evacuation, Kenney Pushing Nutter on Pot Law, Business Up in Philly Parks

The Sheraton in Center City was evacuated early this morning because of smoke in the basement. About 4am the fire department was called to the scene and about 1,000 people had to get out of bed and onto the streets outside the 26 story hotel. The origin of the smoke was an electrical panel in the HVAC system. After about 4 hours outside, guests were allowed to return to their rooms.

Mayor Nutter still has not signed into law the measure that overwhelmingly passed on June 19th making possessing small amounts of marijuana punishable by a $25 fine. And City Councilman James F. Kenney is pressing the mayor to get it done. In a letter to the mayor Kenney writes that this week, another 264 Philadelphians were arrested, handcuffed and jailed for a minimal offense.

The National Park Service has released reports showing the number of visitors to Independence National Historical Park was down slightly but spending was up about $1 million. About 3.5 million people spent $196 million in 2013. Park sites include the Independence Mall historic district, the Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site, the Germantown White House and the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial.
