Reading Mayor Investigated, Araujo Neighbor Charged, Norristown Pool Remains Closed

State prosecutors are investigating allegations of campaign finance violations by the mayor of Reading. The allegations were made in a report commissioned by Berks County officials. They revolve around a $30,000 donation to Spencer by Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The same day, Spencer reported donating $10,000 to each of two Philadelphia City Council candidates. The union already had given the maximum amount under Philadelphia laws to one candidate and nearly the maximum to the other.

A neighbor is being charged with the gruesome murder of a young woman whose body was found early Monday morning dumped in a vacant lot in Kensington. Police say the suspect, 22-year-old Jeremiah Jakson, lived in a room in the same Mantua boarding house as victim Laura Araujo. They say he is no stranger to police and has a long rap sheet of prior arrests. Investigators think Jakson was burglarizing Araujo’s room before he killed her. Police also say he reportedly beat her while trying to get her to reveal her PIN number.

The George Washington Carver Community Center pool in Norristown will most likely remain locked this summer, leaving close to 1,500 kids throughout the community without a cool spot on hot days. The pool needs at least $30,000 for repairs and mounting bills, and hope to open at some point this summer is now all but gone. A private donor offered the center $30,000, but only if the municipality oversaw the operation, ensuring that money went to the pool. But after review, the Municipal Administrator and Norristown Council say the entire pool needs an overhaul, not just repairs, and that it’s too late to find and hire lifeguards.

Weather, July 17

Sunshine. High 85 in Center City.
