Wayne Fire, Jumper Talked Off Walt Whitman Bridge, Parishes May Appeal Closure to Rome

A beautiful stone mansion in Wayne, PA was severely damaged by fire yesterday. The owner of the home on the 200 block of Wyndom Lane is a stone mason who built the home with his own hands and has helped to build many homes on the Main Line. The fire started in the garage where the homeowner was working on his car then spread to the rest of the home. The homeowner suffered minor injuries.

The Walt Whitman Bridge was jammed yesterday afternoon at rush hour when a man threatened to jump from the span. Police had to close lanes at 5:30 for about 3 hours while they talked him down. No one was injured and by 8:30, it was back to normal on the bridge. Police, Philadelphia Fire, and marine units responded to reports that a "man was hanging on the side" of the bridge. Two east bound lanes were closed for the duration of the incident.

Five parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia have been denied their appeals to remain open. Archbishop Charles Chaput reviewed the appeals and did not see evidence that would warrant that decisions be reversed. Two of the parishes are considering taking their appeal to Rome.
