Coast Guard Calls Off Search in OC; Tossed Cigarette Lights Up Car; Rita's Gate Investigation

The US Coast Guard has suspended it's search for a 14-year-old boy who went missing while swimming in the water off Ocean City, NJ. They called off the search at 4:30 Monday afternoon. They had been searching a 50 square mile area. Ocean City Fire and Beach Patrol will continue their search on Tuesday morning. The Philadelphia teen had been with a group of friends on a jetty near 9th street when he was swept out into the water by a rip current. Attempts to rescue him only caught others in the current. Crews had to save 14 people who had gone in to rescue the boy. This happened at 7pm Sunday night when lifeguards were off-duty. Crews searched into the night on Sunday and all day Monday with no sign of the teen.

A driver in Delaware suffered serious burns when his car ignited in flames. It happened on Sunday evening at 6:45 pm on Route 141 near Kirkwood Highway. 49-year-old Travis Paul Smith of Elsmere threw a lit cigarette out of his car window only to have the wind blow it right back into the car. The cigarette then ignited the interior of the vehicle. Smith drove off the road and into a ditch as the car burst into flames. Passing motorists were able to pull him from the flaming wreckage. He suffered second and third degree burns and was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

The investigation continues into what caused the security gate at the Rita's Water Ice in Brewerytown to become detached and collapse. The heavy gate fatally struck 3-year-old Wynter Larkin of Yeadon, PA. Wynter was at the Rita's with her mother Cheryl for a fundraiser of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. It took over 20 fraternity members to lift the gate off of the child. Crews came to remove the gate late Saturday and say that instead of 6-8 inch bolts, it was only attached to the wall with 3 inch bolts. Philadelphia Police and Licenses and Inspections among others continue to investigate what caused it to separate from the building.
