Cape Hanlopen Shark Bite, Child Brings Heroin To Barry Elementary School, Bensalem Cop Attacked

Andrew Vance, swimming at Cape Hanlopen Beach on the Delaware Bay Monday evening, suffered what experts say is a bite from a young sandbar shark. Officials say it is unheard of for a shark to bite swimmers in this area. Marine biologists say it is common to see sandbar sharks this time of year in the Delaware Bay, but a large sturgeon carcass that was on the beach for the past couple of days probably brought sharks in the area to feed on it. Vance needed 22 stitches. (pictured below) He is home now and is expected to be ok.

Twenty first grade students were taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Tuesday after police say a six-year-old student brought eleven packs of heroin into a classroom at Commodore John Barry Elementary School at 59th and Race Streets. School district spokesman Fernando Gallard says police were called to the scene after a first-grade teacher saw one of her pupils playing with the packets. Two of the packets had been opened, investigators say, and one had been chewed open. The girl who is believed to have brought the heroin packets to school was complaining of dizziness and stomach pains. All 20 students in the classroom were bused to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for evaluation and possible treatment.

Police say 23-year-old Matthew Miller, of Bensalem, was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer and related charges. About a half hour after Miller was reported missing from his work-release program at Bucks County Prison, 38-year-old Bensalem officer Michael Jachimski spotted him walking along Woodhaven Road, near the Franklin Mills Mall. Miller’s stabbing of Jachimski was deflected by the officer’s bullet-proof vest. Officer Jachimski still pursued the suspect, who drove off in his police vehicle to be arrested later. Miller was arraigned Tuesday night and sent to the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000,000.
