Philadelphia bids to host DNC 2016; Graduating Seniors March in Philly; 76ers to build in Camden

The City of Philadelphia formally submitted its bid to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016. Friday was the deadline for cities to file their bids with the DNC. Mayor Nutter made the official announcement today highlighting our city's world class airport and Amtrak hub that makes travel to and from the area simple. As a convention/tourist town, Philadelphia also has the resources to accommodate the tens of thousands of visitors expected during that week. Former governor Ed Rendell is in charge of the non-profit group tasked with raising the $50 million it would cost to host the event at the Wells Fargo Center. Experts estimate that the DNC convention would bring $300 million to the area's economy. Philadelphia lasted hosted a political convention in 2000 for the Republican National Convention. The DNC isn't expected to make a decision until late 2014/early 2015.

On Friday, seniors from 70 high schools across Philadelphia marched in a graduation ceremony in Center City. The students marched from Broad and Pine to City Hall. Mayor Nutter and Superintendent Dr. William Hite led the parade. Hundreds of students attended each wearing a t-shirt that read, â€œI did it.â€ Students had to have at least a B+ average to be able to march. Supporting parents were also allowed to march. They wore shirts that said, â€œAnd I helped.â€ This this the third year for the graduation celebration. â€œWe want people to see you. We are proud of you as high school graduates,â€ Nutter said.

The Philadelphia 76ers are planning on a new practice facilities in Camden, NJ. On Friday, the team applied for New Jersey's state tax credits intended to lure businesses to the state. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority will vote of the application on Tuesday. The Sixers are looking to build a whole new practice facility on the Camden waterfront on a plot located between the Camden Aquarium and the Susquehanna Bank Center. The facility would hold both the business and basketball operations in a 100,000 sq ft building. Since 1999, the Sixers have rented practice space at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Coach Brett Brown said that a new facility is â€œcrucialâ€ to player development. Mayor Michael Nutter was determined to keep the Sixers in the city and was competitive in negotiations. The city showed the team numerous sites including the Navy Yard. Nutter would be disappointed if they went to Camden, but notes that they'll still be playing basketball in Philadelphia. If approved, construction would start as early as October.
