A Delaware County man has been charged with stealing $357,000 worth of human skin grafts from a Philadelphia hospital. 54-year-old Gary Dudek of Wallingford worked as a sales representative for a Massachusetts-based regenerative medicine firm. He was in charge of placing orders for Mercy Hospital in West Philadelphia. From November 2011 - July 2013, Dudek would over-order skin grafts for the hospital and skim the extra off the top for himself. Individual grafts are worth $1,700. An internal audit revealed that over 200 unauthorized grafts were ordered but never received by the hospital. Authorities do not know what happened to those extra skin grafts. Dudek was arrested Monday and released Tuesday after posting 10 percent of $10,000 bail.
Parishioners at 46 parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will find out the fate of the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Commission's latests reviews this weekend. This round of evaluations started back in September and every aspect of parish life was looked at, “From sacramental activity, number of baptisms in a parish, number of funerals, number of marriages, looking at the number of registered parishoners, registered households. Looking at financial condition of parishes.†Options could be a merger with a neighboring parish, no change at all, or further study. The Archdiocese serves some 1.5 million Catholics in the area. Changing demographics and population shifts have affected small neighborhood and traditionally ethnic parishes and attendance is down all around. Most church members will find out at their Saturday evening mass with official word on Sunday. Pastors were notified on Friday. 31 parishes have been closed since 2012, leaving 235 remaining.
