NJ Adoptees Law, Montco Water Boil Advisory, Storm Brings Hail and Power Outages

Adoptees in New Jersey are a step closer to getting access to their birth records. The state Assembly on Thursday voted to approve a conditional veto settlement that was brokered by Gov. Chris Christie and lawmakers that would open the records for the first time since they were sealed in 1940. The compromise delays access for nearly three years to give birth parents time to have their names removed from birth certificates.
Birth parents of children adopted before Aug. 1, 2015 would have until the end of 2016 to ask that their names be removed. Those who do would be asked to give some medical history. Biological parents of children adopted after Aug. 1, 2015 would not have the option of redacting their names. Under the bill, birth parents of all adopted children are able to give their preferences for whether — and how — they can be contacted. They have the option of changing their choice at any time.

Eighteen-thousand Montgomery County residents are still waiting for the “all-clear” with their water supply. The state requires two straight days of clean tests before the boil water advisory, that started Tuesday, can be lifted. The boil water advisory remains in effect for Pennsylvania American Water customers in these Montgomery County townships: East and West Norriton, Lower Providence, Whitpain, Worcester and Whitemarsh.

Heavy rain and hail caused thousands of people to lose power in the Delaware Valley on Thursday. Residents in Berks County are seeing the worst of it with 3,677 residents without power at this time. In Chester County, 1,274 homes are without power. Philadelphia residents are not seeing a significant loss. PECO says only scattered outages have been reported. In New Jersey, PSE&G says there is a total of 97 outages and there are no outages in the southern part of the state. Delmarva in Delaware says they’re reporting 31 active outages with 2,438 customers affected. Airport officials say a U.S. Airways flight from Orlando landed at Philadelphia International Airport with a cracked windshield. U.S. Airways believes that hail caused the windshield crack.
