PA Gay Marriage Ban Lifted; Mother Backs Over Toddler; Two AC Cops Arrested for Child Sex Assault

Pennsylvania's Defense of Marriage act was overturned by a federal judge on Tuesday, effectively lifting the state's ban on same-sex marriage. U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III's ruling was in response to a challenge to the 1996 DOM law brought by a group of 23 Pennsylvania residents who were supported by the ACLU. Jones ruled the ban was unconstitutional because it denied equal protection and benefits to same-sex couples. Pennsylvania becomes the 19th state and last in the Northeast to recognize gay marriage. Last year, Attorney General Kathleen Kane refused to defend the state against this lawsuit. Marriages in other states will now be recognized in Pennsylvania. Couples across the state have already started to apply for marriage licenses. Philadelphia's Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphan's Court Ronald Donatucci extended office hours today and will open early at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. An appeal is expected in the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A toddler was struck Tuesday afternoon when her mother backed into her in the driveway of their Jersey shore home. It happened at 1:15 pm on Flatbush Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Neighbors came to the rescue when the 14-month-old girl was accidentally run over by her mother backing out of their driveway. The child was flown to the hospital. There are no details on her status.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain says that two police officers have been arrested for separate and independent incidents of child sexual assault and official misconduct. Brigantine Police Officer Ralph Pereira, 43, and Atlantic City Police Officer Andre Corbin, 43, were both arrested on Monday. They were both charged with several second degree offenses including official misconduct, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. They were also charged with criminal sexual contact, a fourth degree crime. The crimes occurred while Pereira and Corbin each held positions of authority and disciplinary power two different 16-year-old female victims. Corbin was released after posting $100,000 cash bail. Pereira remains at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $100,000 cash bail. The second degree crimes carry potential sentence of 5-10 years.
