Havertown Doctor Marijuana Bust; Penn State Alumni Paterno Statue; Frankford Torresdale Opens

Police in Havertown raided the home of a local ophthalmologist on Wednesday and arrested the doctor and his daughter for growing and selling marijuana from the residence. 58-year-old Dr. Paul Ezell and his 23-year-old daughter Victoria have been charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession with the intent to sell a controlled substance, as well as criminal conspiracy. Police acted on a tip they received a month ago that Ezell was selling marijuana to patients. Authorities confiscated 27 plants at different stages of growth, along with other elements to run an operation such as grow lights, scales, and containers. Authorities say the electricity usage from the home on the 200 block of Sagamore Road also indicated a grow but ventilations systems covered up an smell from outside. The Ezells both have a cash bail set at $50,000

Two Penn State alumni have received approval from borough officials to place a new bronze statue of the late Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno in Downtown State College. This new project could cost upwards of $300,000 and would portray him life-size, sitting on a bench, and reading Virgil's "Aeneid." The organizers have commissioned Philadelphia artist, Zenos Frudakis. He sculpted the bronzes outside of Citizen's Bank Park. A $50,000 Kickstarter campaign starting in July will hopefully provide a portion of the funds. The university is not involved in this project. The statue of Paterno next to Beaver Stadium was removed during the fallout from the Sandusky scandal. This new statue will sit outside The Tavern Restaurant, on a walkway off East College Avenue, and will replace two marble benches.

On December 23rd a 48-inch water main broke, flooding the area of Frankford and Torresdale avenues in the Northeast. Water pressure suddenly dropped in a large part of the city, miles from the break. Numerous businesses in the area suffered water damage. After 4 months of work throughout the winter, the Philadelphia Water Department has completed work. The intersection opened back up today at 3 pm.
