Lawncrest Shooting, Centeno Sentenced 57 Months, WW II Vet Surprised By Five Medal Awards

One man is dead and another man is hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting Thursday night. It happened shortly before 6 p.m. in the 5700 block of Newtown Street in Philadelphia's Lawncrest neighborhood. Both men were duct taped around their head, eyes and wrists. Police say six shell casings were found at the scene.

A 26-year-old Camden man was sentenced to 57 months in prison Thursday for a vicious, random beating near Independence Hall in 2012. Baldwin Centeno and his 47-year-old uncle Santos were standing on 4th Street near the National Independence Park when the 35-year old victim approached them, and asked for help finding his missing car. Centeno and his uncle began to savagely attack the man, leaving him with traumatic brain injuries, facial fractures, and other injuries that landed him in the hospital.

Senator Chris Coons got a chance to surprise a World War II veteran, whose nephew was being honored with a Bronze Star Medal. Major David Strawbridge was presented with the award for his service in Afghanistan. Strawbridge decided it was the perfect time to share the spotlight with his uncle, Francis Weaver, who was an Army technician during World War II. Weaver was presented with five long-overdue medals. The reason why he was never presented with a medal earlier, medals weren’t created until two years after World War II. And Weaver’s military records were destroyed by a fire at the National Archive more than 40 years ago.
