Microsoft XP Done, SEPTA Train Hits Jenkintown Man, SEPTA Transit Strike

Tuesday's the day: Microsoft is X-ing out Windows XP, pulling support for the operating system nearly 13 years after its release. Some estimates show XP is still installed on more than a quarter of the world’s PCs, and, XP will work as it’s left in the dust. Even though major antivirus companies have promised to continue their support of the operating system, some say attackers could try to reverse-engineer patches Microsoft puts out for its newer software to strike the same flaws in XP. Others suggest businesses especially arm themselves with firewalls, strong password and network access policies, and to align themselves with a firm whose business is cybersecurity.

One of SEPTA’s Regional Rail lines was down during the Monday commute after a person was struck and killed by a train. The West Trenton line was shut down around 5 p.m. near the Noble Station in Abington after authorities say a 20-year-old man from Jenkintown was struck and killed by an outbound SEPTA West Trenton train. The man was apparently walking west on the tracks and had his back to trains traveling west. The engineer aboard the train said he came around the bend and saw the man on the tracks. He blew the horn multiple times and locked up the brakes but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the victim.

Currently, there is no SEPTA mass transit strike. But no new contract talks have been scheduled, either. Now the question is whether the next step is cementing a deal, dealing with a job action, or continuing in limbo. The Transport Workers’ Union Local 234, has been working under terms of a contract that expired in mid-March. SEPTA buses, subways and trains offer an average of 900,000 trips daily during the week. Workers salaries and pension cost make up about 70 percent of their $1.3 billion operating budget. The union has indicated they’re holding out for a package comparable to what managers were offered.
