PAC and Ed McBride Fined, West Philly Abduction Arrests. Verdi Pleads Not Guilty

The Philadelphia Board of Ethics and a political action committee linked to Local 98 of the Electrical Workers' union have settled up on a 2013 investigation into campaign finance reporting violations. The settlement agreement provides for a $1000 fine to be paid jointly by Philadelphia Phuture PAC, and its treasurer, Ed McBride, who had long been associated with Local 98. The PAC failed to file an independent expenditure of nearly $18,000 worth of flyers, sample ballots and door hangars promoting various candidates.

Police have made two arrests in connection with the abduction and robbery of an 80-year-old woman in West Philadelphia on Monday. Philadelphia Police say 57-year-old Vickson Korlewala and 51-year-old Lorpu Korlewala, both of the 5500 block of Market Street, were taken into custody. They are both charged with robbery, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, theft, conspiracy, simple assault.

Former Philadelphia Licenses and Inspections Deputy Commissioner Dominic Verdi has made his initial appearance in federal court a day after a federal grand jury charged he used his office to steer beer sales his way. Verdi allegedly provided favorable treatment to bar and club owners who bought beer from a beer distributor business he owned. Verdi pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, extortion, and fraud charges. Verdi is accused of using his position at the city’s Licenses and Inspection department to funnel money to a South Philadelphia beer distributor he owns called Chappy’s Beer.
