Teens Charged as Adults in Temple Attacks; PSPCA Removes 260 Cats; Cinnamon Challenge Sickens 5 Kids

The Philadelphia District Attorney's office has charged three teenage girls as adults in the attacks against Temple University students last Friday. 16-year-old Najee Bilaal, 15-year-old Zaria Estes, and 15-year-old Kanesha Gainey have been charged with Aggravated Assault, Conspiracy, Possession of an Instrument of a Crime, Terroristic Threats, Simple Assault and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. In one instance a female had a brick throw in her face damaging her teeth. Two other females were punched and hit. The group of teens may have been participating in or trying to excite a flash mob along 17th street near the college campus. Bail for Gainey was set at $75,000, and bail for Estes and Bilaal was set at $100,000 each.

Pennsylvania SPCA officers were working all day to remove hundreds of cats from a Frankford property. This morning they executed a warrant to remove over 260 cats from the property on the 1600 block of Filmore Street. The woman at the home had a license to run an animal emergency shelter, but the deteriorating conditions made it necessary to remove all the animals. Officers had to wear respirators due to the high levels of ammonia in the air. The cats will be taken to the PSPCA Erie Avenue headquarters to be examined and sheltered. The neighbors complained about the smell and the cats that would run all around the neighborhood.

Five Philadelphia children have been hospitalized after trying the â€œcinnamon challengeâ€ with a group of classmates. It happened at 12:30pm on Wednesday at the Richard Wright School at 27th and Dauphin in Strawberry Mansion. At lunch time, a total of nine fifth graders attempted the â€œchallenge,â€ which originated on the Internet and simply involves swallowing a tablespoon of dry cinnamon in under a minute. Five children, boys and girls, were taken to Saint Christopher's Hospital after displaying abnormal vital signs. Swallowing dry cinnamon can cause choking, irritation/inflammation/scarring of the lungs, chest pains, and pneumonia if cinnamon is inhaled.
