Philadelphia City Council Votes to Raise Property Taxes and Parking for School Budget

After a long day of deliberations, negotiations, and proposals, City Council ended the day around 8:30 pm settling on a $53 million package that includes a 4% property tax increase, an increase in Center City parking, and a $10 million appropriation.

Mayor Nutter is happy with this package despite it not including his 2-cents-per-ounce 'soda tax', the second year in a row it has been shot down. This made the beverage workers lobbying at city hall happy as well.

Superintendent Arlene C. Ackerman plans to take the newly generated money and be able to work on saving their top budget priorities including yellow bus transportation, some alternative schools, the reduced class size initiative and early childhood programs.

The Council and Mayor feel good that they have done their job in putting education funds on the table and are hopeful now that Harrisburg can now bring some too.
