Princeton Meningitis Shots, Craigslist Killer Claims 20+ Lives, Powerball Up to $400 Million

Princeton University is offering booster shots for students and staff who received the meningitis B vaccine late last year. The second dose will be available from Monday through Thursday at the school's Frist Campus Center. It's available to undergraduate students, graduate students living on campus and staff members with certain illnesses. Nearly 5,300 people got the vaccine for the B strain of the meningitis bacteria. That represents 91 percent of the approximately 5,800 university community members who were eligible to receive it. The vaccine is approved for use in Europe, Australia and Canada but is not yet approved for general use in the United States. The vaccinations were given last December as part of the university’s effort to halt an outbreak. People who only received one dose of the vaccine have an increased risk of getting meningitis, because the protection provided by the first dose declines over time. State law requires that all students who live in college dorms in New Jersey receive a meningitis vaccination, but that does not protect against the B strain.

A Pennsylvania woman charged with her newlywed husband with killing a man they met through Craigslist admitted to the slaying in a jailhouse interview with a newspaper and said she has killed more than 20 other people across the country, claims police said they are investigating. In an interview with The Daily Item in Sunbury, 19-year-old Miranda Barbour said she wants to plead guilty to killing Troy LaFerrara in November. She also said in the interview she has killed at least 22 other people from Alaska to North Carolina in the last six years as part of her involvement in a satanic cult. Sunbury police Chief Steve Mazzeo told the newspaper that investigators were aware of Miranda Barbour’s claims of involvement in other murders. He said they are “”seriously concerned” and have contacted police in other jurisdictions.
In a statement issued Sunday, the FBI’s Philadelphia division said it had been in contact with Sunbury police and “will offer any assistance requested in the case.”

Without a Powerball winner this weekend, the prize has climbed to $400 million — one of the largest in U.S. lottery history. The next drawing is Wednesday, and will be the fourth-biggest Powerball jackpot and sixth-highest lottery prize of all time — at least $400 million or $227.8 million in a lump sum.
