Governor Tom Corbett has signed a disaster emergency proclamation Wednesday after a winter storm left hundreds of thousands without power in Pennsylvania. At a press briefing, Gov. Corbett said 849,000 customers lost power in the state. The Governor says the disaster emergency proclamation is to assist state and local authorities in responding to the winter storm. Gov. Corbett said this will be a long recovery process and they are using the disaster declaration to speed up state assistance.

Rosemont College says an extended power outage in the region due to the winter storm is affecting power, heat, and hot water on campus. According to Rosemont’s website, the college will be closed on Thursday, February 6th and Friday, February 7th. No classes will be held in the Undergraduate College and in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies, and all College offices will be closed. The College is urging all on campus resident students, who can travel safely, to return home. Rosemont also encourages students who cannot travel home to consider going home with classmates who do live within reasonable traveling distance.

Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, 47 year old Curt Schilling announced Wednesday he has been diagnosed with cancer. Schilling pitched with the Phillies from 1992 to 2000 and is the fourth member of the 1993 National League Championship team to be diagnosed with cancer. Darren Daulton, Todd Pratt, and former coach John Vukovich have all battled the disease. The statement didn’t say what type of cancer Schilling has, but he has asked for prayers for him and his family .
