PennDOT Road Clear Challenge, Widener Shooter Sought, Mass Transit Schedules Modified

PennDOT crews have begun mixing in calcium-chloride to their typical salt mixture because of plunging temperatures. Once temperatures reach 15 degrees or less, the regular salt reduces its ability to melt the snow and ice, so they add the calcium-chloride which helps maintain the salt's effectiveness. PennDOT began the new salting process around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, but the conditions of the roads still are not great.

A shooting on the campus of Widener University does not appear to be a random act of violence, officials announced Tuesday as the search for the shooter continues. According to police, a 19-year-old student was sitting inside a vehicle after playing a game of basketball when he was approached by the shooter. University officials say the victim is currently in stable but critical condition at Crozer Chester Medical Center. Authorities are reviewing surveillance video in the area as the investigation continues.

The winter storm that pummeled the Delaware Valley on Tuesday has prompted some mass transit systems to modify their service schedules and make accommodations for commuters for Wednesday.

Amtrak
Amtrak says they will operate a modified schedule on the Northeast Corridor between Washington and Boston, the Keystone Service (New York-Harrisburg, Pa.) and the Empire Line between New York City and Albany on Wednesday.

Acela Express and Northeast Regional service will operate between Boston and Washington, though passengers should expect reduced frequencies. Service will also operate on the Empire Line between New York City and Albany and on the Keystone line between New York and Harrisburg, with reduced frequencies.

Passengers holding reservations that require modification are being accommodated on other trains and proactively notified by Amtrak Customer Service. A range of tools – including Amtrak.com, smartphone apps and 1-800-USA-RAIL – are available to assist in travel planning.

Other corridor services, including the Amtrak Downeaster (Brunswick, Maine – Boston) and the Springfield Shuttle (New Haven, Ct. – Springfield, Mass.), are expected to operate a normal schedule.
Amtrak says passengers who have paid but choose not to travel due to this service disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel.

Call 800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com/alerts for Service Alerts and Passenger Notices.

NJ Transit
Due to inclement weather, all NJ TRANSIT Rail Lines except the Atlantic City Line will operate on enhanced weekend schedule on Wednesday. To see enhanced weekend schedules from this program, type in February 17 as the date.

To see printable versions of these schedules, click HERE, then choose the Weekend/Major Holiday schedule for your line.

The Atlantic City Line will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Wednesday.
