| NJ State of Emergency Declared, Mass Transit Modified Schedules, PENNDOT Snow Removal |

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency for the severe winter storm that is hitting New Jersey. This authorizes the State Director of Emergency Management to activate and coordinate the preparation, response and recovery efforts for the storm. Governor Christie also authorized the closing of state offices on Friday for all non-essential employees.
Philadelphia Public and Archdiocesan schools will be closed on Friday.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike has imposed a 45-mph speed limit the length of I-476 from the Mid-County Interchange to Clarks Summit (north of Scranton) and has been extended on I-76/I-276 from Morgantown to the Delaware River Bridge.
Mass transit systems across the Delaware Valley are modifying service schedules and making accommodations for commuters due to the winter storm. Amtrak says they will operate on a modified snow schedule on Friday, Jan. 3.
Acela Express and Northeast Regional service will operate between Boston and Washington. Passengers should expect reduced frequencies, particularly in New England. Amtrak says corridor services, including the Keystone Service (New York – Harrisburg, Pa.), Empire Service(New York – Albany, N.Y.), Amtrak Downeaster(Brunswick, Maine – Boston) and most of the Springfield Shuttle (New Haven, Ct. – Springfield, Mass.), are not affected and are expected to operate a normal schedule.
Passengers holding reservations that require modification are being accommodated on other trains and proactively notified by Amtrak Customer Service. Amtrak says passengers who have paid but choose not to travel due to this service disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel. Amtrak says a range of tools including Amtrak.com, smartphone apps and 1-800-USA-RAIL are available to assist in travel planning.
NJ Transit passengers will be able to use their passes system-wide during the incoming weather event. The transportation company says cross-honoring has been extended through Friday, Jan. 3 in order to give riders additional travel options. That means passes are good for all rail, light rail, bus or private bus carriers. NJ Transit says it will continue to monitor the storm and may make changes to service if necessary. Philadelphia International Airport advises anyone with plans to fly to check the status of their flight before leaving for the Airport. Anyone who is planning to come to the Airport to meet someone arriving on an in-bound flight is also advised to check the flight status before leaving for PHL. Flight information can be obtained directly from the airline, by calling the Airport’s toll-free flight information line, 1.800.PHL.GATE (1.800.745.4283), or by checking the website.
Cape May – Lewes Ferry (CMLF) officials announced that the service will be operating a modified scheduled for Friday, Jan. 3. Four (4) departures scheduled have been cancelled: 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from Cape May, New Jersey and 11:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. from Lewes, Delaware.
For Friday, Jan. 3, the modified schedule is as follows:
Cape May, NJ Lewes, DE
7:30 a.m. 9:15 a.m.
11:00 a.m. 12:45 p.m.
2:30 p.m. 4:15 p.m.
6:00 p.m. 7:45 p.m.

PennDOT laid down a brine solution on area highways in hopes of keeping snow from sticking too much on the road surfaces as the winter storm hits and plowing begins after one-half inch of snow accumulates. The weather system is expected to create plenty of blowing and drifting snow through the morning rush. Due to extreme winter road conditions, PennDOT temporarily reduced the speed limit on several expressways in the region to 45 mph, including:
• Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676;
• U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422, and
• State Routes 63 and 309.
PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.
