PA Turnpike WB Reopens, Court Dismisses Lynn Criminal Case, Fancy Brigade Getting Ready

A chain-reaction crash involving dozens of vehicles Thursday morning shut down a portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 78. The snowy, messy scene was about 50 miles west of Philadelphia between the Morgantown and Reading exits in Berks County. The Pennsylvania Turnpike westbound was closed between Exit 298/Morgantown (I-176) and Exit 286/Lancaster/Reading (US-222) in Lancaster for about eight hours.

In a major ruling in the local priest abuse case, an appeals court has dismissed the criminal case against a high-ranking church official in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It says he was wrongly convicted for his handling of abuse complaints. Monsignor William Lynn has been behind bars since June of 2012, serving three to six years in prison at Waymart, in northeastern Pennsylvania. “The superior court has ordered him to be released forthwith,” his defense lawyer, Thomas Bergstrom said.

The 11 clubs competing in this year’s Mummers’ Fancy Brigade indoor shows today started moving sets, props, and other materials into the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The big event will take place on New Year’s Day. One of the competition rules is that clubs have just two days to move the larger pieces into the convention center. Each club has 4 minutes and 30 seconds to present a stage production on New Year’s Day. About 3, 500 mummers will perform. There are two shows, at 12 noon and 5pm. Tickets are still available. For more information go to fancybrigade.com.
