Mgsr. Lynn Conviction Overturned; UPS and FedEx Delays; Turnpike Reopens after Berks 35 car Pileup

A Pennsylvania appeals court has overturned a landmark conviction against a high ranking Archdiocese of Philadelphia church official today. Monsignor William Lynn was found guilty of felony child endangerment in June 2012 for his role in handling child sex abuse allegations brought against priests in the Archdiocese. Lynn served as the secretary for clergy for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1992-2004. The appeals court reversed the decision based on the child endangerment statue in effect during Lynn's tenure. Lynn's lawyer argued that the child-endangerment law at the time applied only to parents and caregivers with direct contact with the children, not supervisors like Lynn. DA Seth Williams plans to appeal. Lynn has been ordered released from prison. He has served over 1 year of a three to six year term.

Shipping problems with both UPS and FedEx left many in the Delaware Valley still waiting on Christmas presents yesterday despite the 'Guaranteed' Christmas Eve delivery dates. Part of the blame was put on bad weather in other parts of the country earlier this week and an overloaded system. Other reasons are larger in scale, including a shorter shopping season and the growing popularity of online shopping. Amazon.com is refunding shipping costs and extending $20 credit for late arriving orders. If you ordered and shipped by UPS expect your package by end of day tomorrow. If your order shipped by FedEx and it still has not arrived then you should contact customer service.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Westbound past the Downingtown exit reopened at 5:30 pm after being closed for 7 hours following a 35 vehicle crash that stretched 3 miles. The accident occurred Thursday morning between the Morgantown and Reading exits in Berks County. The chain-reaction crash was initiated by a heavy snow squall that broke out that quickly reduced visibilities along the highway and also made for slippery conditions. 10 people were taken to hospitals, but there were reports of serious injuries. A similar accident occurred on I-78, also westbound in Berks County between mileposts 35 and 40. About 40 cars were involved in that pile up.
