Charter School Fraud Case Deliberations, Atlantic County Pilot Dies in Crash, St. Jude Shop Robbery

The jury in a charter school fraud case in Philadelphia will return to its deliberations Thursday, with the potential of losing some jurors by Friday. As the deliberations drag on, Federal Court Judge Barclay Surrick has now given jurors instructions on how to fashion a partial verdict. The judge told jurors if they reach unanimous agreement on some of the charges, they could return a verdict on those charges, then continue deliberating on the others. But it would be final, and they would not be able to change their minds later on. With the holidays approaching, at least two jurors have told the court that they have conflicts and compelling reasons that could prevent them from returning on Friday, if deliberations continue that long. Thatâ€™s why they have alternate jurors in the wings, but not yet engaged. If one or more alternates are needed, deliberations would have to start from scratch.

Virginia State Police say a pilot was killed following a small plane crash in Albemarle County Wednesday morning. The six-seater, single-engine Beechcraft crashed landed in the front yard of a house. No structures were struck by the plane. The pilot has been identified as 52-year-old Gregory A. Voit of Northfield, N.J. The aircraft had left Woodbine Airport in New Jersey and was to land at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport. Officials say the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.

The search is on for two suspects who held up a Northeast Philadelphia store and tied up the 62-year-old cashier. It happened at the St. Jude Religious Store at the 2100 block of Cottman Avenue. One day after the frightening ordeal, the cashier is not going back â€” she quit her job. The suspects used plastic bags to tie up the woman. The suspects walked away with close to $400, leaving employees on edge during a busy time for them, the week before Christmas.
