Northeast Teen Dies Saving Stepdad; City Clerk Impersonates Cop; Sentence for NJ Income Tax Fraud

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a teenager in Northeast Philadelphia who died saving the lives of his stepfather and two other passengers when his stepfather became incapcitated behind the wheel. The incident happened 12:30 p.m. Saturday on Red Lion Road and Norcom Drive. 45-year-old Joseph Synder was driving his stepson 17-year-old Christopher Alvelo home from his Eagle Scout service project in Pennypack Park. During the trip home, Synder suffered a medical emergency and passed out behind the wheel. Alvelo unbuckled his seat belt, put his foot on the pedals, reached over, and tried to steer the car away from danger. It crashed into the back of a parked paratransit bus. Alvelo died in the crash. His stepdad was hospitalized with several injuries including broken vertebrae. Alvelo's fellow scouts, 18-year-old Nick Pendergrast, 15-year-old Mike Erickson and 16-year-old Dalton Madden, were all in the back seat and only suffered minor injuries. There will be a candlelight vigil Monday night at his high school, New Foundations Charter School.

A Philadelphia city clerk has been arrested after pulling a gun on three auto shop workers posing as a sheriff. It began around 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Midas Auto Shop on 42nd and Market Street. 45-year-old Barry Young was in his Lincoln Navigator, blocking traffic into the parking lot. The manager asked him to move out of the way. That's when Young got out the car, pull the gun out, told him and two employees he was a police officer, and thenstruck the manager. The manager reported the incident. When real officers caught up Young, he claimed to be a deputy sheriff. Young is charged with assault, impersonating a police officer, terroristic threats and other related offenses. He is currently out on bond awaiting a hearing on November 12.

50-year-old Kenneth Costello, formerly of Willingboro, NJ, was sentenced to five years in state prison after he plead guilty to receiving $545,000 by filing fraudulent state tax returns back in 2008. Burlington County prosecutors say that he had placed his money in various bank accounts. Costello's fraud went undiscovered until last year when he complained to a Willingboro bank that one of his accounts was being accessed without his permission. Lisa Jarvis, a bank teller, had created a debit card for Costello's account and stole $100,000 over 2 years. She was sentenced to three years in prison. Costello officially plead guilty to money laundering.
