Ephrata Man Convicted of Beating Wife; Video of Blind Man Assault; MontCo School Cancels Halloween

A Lancaster County man was convicted today for beating his wife for not addressing him as "sir" in front of their children. Prosecutors said that 49-year-old Dan Kirby Kopp of Ephrata would beat his wife with a wooden paddle when he thought she wasn't being respectful. He'd take her over his knee and spank her. The wife used her iPhone to record a September 2012 episode showing the 6'5", 230 lb man hitting her with the paddle for not saying "Yes, sir." Kopp was convicted of misdemeanor stalking and harassment. He was sentenced Tuesday to one to 23 months in prison and one year parole.

Police have released new images of a man wanted for the assault of a 33-year-old blind man in Germantown last Wednesday. The assault happened on October 2nd shortly after noon. The blind man was walking on Seymor Street towards Wayne Ave. The suspect can be seen standing on the corner and watching the man walking towards him. Then the suspect knocks the man down andkicks hims, injuring his head. The suspect is described as a black male, about 20 years old. He was wearing a tan baseball cap, tan shirt, khaki pants and had a dark-colored backpack.

A Montgomery County elementary school has decided to cancel Halloween celebrations this year. Parent's received a letter on Tuesday from the principal of Inglewood Elementary School in Towamencin Township, near Lansdale. The school is part of the North Penn School District. It told parent's that they had decided not to hold school wide Halloween parades or celebrations during school hours. The letter read: "Some holidays observed in the community that are considered by many to be secular (ex. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Valentine's Day) are viewed by others as having religious overtones. The district must always be mindful of the sensitivity of all the members of the community with regard to holidays and celebrations of a religious, cultural or secular nature. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that school districts may not endorse, prefer, favor, promote or advance any religious beliefs...." The letter cited possible religious overtones of the holiday and maintaining sensitivity to all members of the community. Many parents were outraged by the decision. The letter did not specifically address preventing individual classrooms from having a party.

UPDATE: There has been clarification of the letter sent to parent's of Inglewood Elementary students. Halloween has not been cancelled at the school. North Penn School District addressed the confusion over their administrative regulations... â€œSchools are permitted to have Halloween parties in their classrooms during the school day and school-wide activities such as parades are permitted before and after the school day. In fact, Inglewood Elementary School will hold such a Fall Festivalâ€¦ on the evening of October 18th.â€
