Seaside Fire was Electrical; No Bail Reduction in Salvation Collapse; Mont to Appeal Marriage Ruling

Officials say that last week's massive boardwalk fire in Seaside Park was caused by an electrical issue. Live wires underneath the boardwalk which had been eroded by Hurricane Sandy sparked the blaze. The wires were located between the boardwalk and the building and were inaccessible to people. During Sandy they would have been exposed to salt water and sand for an extended period of time. Authorities ruled out arson or smoking as causes of the fire. It started near Kohr's Custard and Biscayne Candies and quickly spread north into Seaside Heights.

A bail reduction has been denied for the crane operator in the deadly building collapse this past June at the Salvation Army thrift store. Sean Benschop's bail will remain at $1.6 million. He is the only person who has been charged in the case where a building under demolition collapsed onto the thrift store killing six people. A grand jury investigation continues into the collapse. Benshop is charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter, with additional charges linked to more than a dozen injured people.

The Montgomery register of wills, D. Bruce Hanes, will appeal a ruling by Commonwealth Judge Dante Pellegrini ordering him to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Hanes began issuing licenses in July after he determined that Pennsylvania's 1996 state Defense of Marriage law was unconstitutional. The PA Department of Health sued Hanes saying his job as an official was to follow the law. Judge Pellegrini agreed. His written opinion states, â€œ...unless and until either the General Assembly repeals or suspends the Marriage Law provisions or a court of competent jurisdiction orders that the law is not to be obeyed or enforced, the Marriage Law in its entirety is to be obeyed and enforced by all Commonwealth public officials.â€
