Nutter Declines Same-Sex Marriage; Camden Couple Chained Boy; Cigarette Cause of Daly Explosion

Mayor Michael Nutter has declined an invitation to officiate a wedding of a same-sex Philadelphia couple. The two men who live in Center City obtained a marriage license from Montgomery County. D. Bruce Hanes, the register of the wills of Montgomery County, has been issuing licenses to same-sex couples since July claiming the 1996 Pennsylvania marriage law is unconstitutional. The ACLU is currently challenging that 1996 law that defines marriage as between a man and woman. The Department of Health is challenging Hanes' ability to issue those licenses. Nutter supports gay marriage but will not officiate at a wedding until the legal questions are settled.

A Camden mother and her boyfriend have been arrested for chaining the mother's 10-year-old son to a radiator for two weeks. Police say the mother had called police on Monday afternoon to report her son had run away. A neighbor called a short time later to report that the boy was found just a few blocks from home. When police talked to the boy he revealed that he had been chained up in his mother's bedroom and forced to sleep on the floor as punishment. His hands were sometimes bound with plastic zip ties. A search of the home found a metal chain and lock attached to a radiator pipe in the bedroom. Florence Pollard, 31, and her boyfriend, Brian L. Craig, of Blackwood, were arrested and charged with with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 2nd degree and Criminal Restraint, 3rd degree. The boy and his 5 siblings were taken into protective custody by NJ Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

The Philadelphia Fire Department has determined the cause of the explosion that demolished a South Philadelphia home and injured 8 people at the end of July. Steve Barrientos, a building contractor, was working inside 428 Daly Street on the morning of July 29 when the explosion went off leveling that home and damaging neighboring houses. Officials have determined that a small natural gas leak had filled the row house with gas. Philadelphia Fire Executive Chief William Dell says that when the contractor attempted to light a cigarette with a butane lighter the flame ignited the gas and sparked the blast. Early speculation pointed to this cause, but officials could not confirm until further investigation and talking with Barrientos.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the 2014 schedule. The home opener will be Monday, April 7th at Citizen’s Bank Park against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Phillies will open the season in Arlington, TX with an interleague series against the Rangers. The Phillies will host four American League teams as part of 2014 Interleague play: The Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Seattle Mariners, who will make their first appearance ever at Citizens Bank Park, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
