NOAA says Virus Killing Dolphins; Man Charged w/ Murder in Kidnapping; Cozy Morley passes at 87

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the cetacean morbillivirus is likely what's causing hundreds of dead bottlenose dolphins to wash ashore along the East Coast. They say 333 dolphins have been stranded between New York and North Carolina since July 1. That's more than nine times the historical average for the region during July and August. Earlier this month, NOAA declared an unusual mortality event to provide additional resources to study what's causing the deaths. Dolphins with morbillivirus typically experience skin lesions, brain infections and pneumonia. The virus killed off more than 700 dolphins in the 1980s.

Ummad Rushdi, accused of kidnapping his girlfriend's infant from his mother's Upper Darby home, has now been charged with the baby's murder. The 30-year-old has been charged with 1st,2nd,and 3rd degree murder of 7-month-old Hamza Ali. The boy was last seen at Rushdi's mother's home on Chestnut Street August 3rd and reported missing on August 6th after the mother doubted that he would bring the baby home. Investigators believe Rushdi murdered the baby and disposed of the body in York or Lancaster County. He was arrested on August 7th in York, PA. Despite search efforts the body of Ali has not been found.

Popular South Jersey comedian and singer Thomas Francis "Cozy" Morley has passed away at the age of 87. Morley was born on Two Street in South Philadelphia and attended Southeast Catholic High School. He became an icon in South Jersey as the owner of the 1,200-seat Club Avalon in North Wildwood. Morley purchased the club in the early '50s and had it packed most nights. Morley's jokes probably wouldn't pass the pc test these days but his act was still family friendly at the time. He was also a musician himself and would often book acts such as Glen Miller Band, Al Martino, Julius LaRosa, Al Alberts, Johnny Ray, and Joey Bishop. A tribute is being worked for Mummer's Weekend after Labor Day.
