NJ Senate Race, Peruto Girlfriend Death Grand Jury Investigation, West Philly House Collapse

Three Democrats seeking their party's nomination in a special U.S. Senate race are taking aim at the fourth candidate and front runner Newark Mayor Cory Booker in their final debate before polling next week. Last night's debate is just the second time Booker, Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and U.S. Reps. Rush Holt and Frank Pallone have all been at a forum together. Primary voting is Tuesday. Alieta Eck and Steve Lonegan are seeking the Republican nomination to run in the Oct. 16 general election.

The secret grand jury investigation into the death of the girlfriend and paralegal of prominent Philadelphia attorney A. Charles Peruto Junior presumably continues, but there is a development. A. Charles Peruto Junior has confirmed he sent a letter to the District Attorney, essentially urging the office to end the grand jury investigation into the death of Julia Law in his apartment in May, since the evidence points to an accidental death. Investigators reported no signs of foul play at the scene, or evidence of trauma to the body, and Peruto was at the Jersey shore at the time the body was found by a maintenance worker.

A vacant house, set for demolition, partially collapsed in West Philadelphia Thursday afternoon. The incident happened at the 3600 block of Fairmount Avenue in the Mantua section. The house was scheduled to be demolished today. No injuries were reported. There was no damage reported to neighboring properties. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
