U.S. Court strikes 'I (heart) Boobies' School Ban; LHP Bastardo Suspended; Eagles Practice at Linc

In 2010, Brianna Hawk and Kayla Martinez, from Easton Area School District (PA), challenged their school when they were told they couldn't wear the rubber "I (heart) Boobies!" bracelets in support of breast cancer. When they were suspended for wearing them on Breast Awareness Day they sued with the help of the ACLU. District solicitor John Freund contends that the bracelets have a sexual undertone that can bring disruption in the middle school environment. Today, however, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected school district claims that the slogan was lewd. It also said the district failed to prove they were disruptive. "Because the bracelets here are not plainly lewd and because they comment on a social issue, they may not be categorically banned," the court said in a 9-5 decision.

Philadelphia Phillies' Pitcher Antonio Bastardo has accepted a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenisis scandal involving 13 other players for purported use of performance enhancing drugs. The sanctions were announced today after a lengthy investigation by Major League Baseball. Bastardo is 3-2 with a 2.32 ERA in 48 games and has pitched fairly well this season in an otherwise hard pressed bullpen. New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez received the stiffest penality of 211 games through 2014. He plans to appeal.

Today the Philadelphia Eagles held another open practice at Lincoln Financial Field during preseason training camp. Eager fans were already at the gates when they opened at 10:30am for the 12:30 practice. Instead of heading to Lehigh University this year where practices were open daily to fans, the Eagles decided to keep all activities in South Philadelphia this season at the NovaCare complex with select public practices at the Linc. It is still free but you need a ticket to attend. Today was military appreciation day and hundred of troops and families were on hand to see the Birds in action. The team's first preseason game is this Friday night vs. New England at the Linc. It will be our first glance at new Head Coach Chip Kelly's squad in action.

Partly Cloudy, temps in mid 70's
