Brad Lidge Retires as a Phillie; New NJ Handicap Law; Kidnapper Castro Sentenced to Life plus 1000 y

Former Philadelphia Phillies' relief pitcher Brad Lidge is back in town tonight to officially retire from MLB as a member of the Phillies. He was honored before tonight's game and threw out the first pitch to a familiar face, Phils' catcher Carlos Ruiz. It was that same hookup that was immoralized as Lidge threw the final pitch for a strike out in the 2008 World Series sending Ruiz running to the mound and marking the first championship for the team since 1980. That year Brad was a perfect 41-for-41 in saves during the regular season and added 7 more in the postseason. He started his career in Houston, playing 6 of his 11 seasons, but chose to come back to Philadelphia for his sendoff where he was most successful.

A new law takes effect in New Jersey today that will affect those with handicap placards and license plates. The law will require those with handicap parking to prove that they are disabled. Handicap placards are renewed every three years. Now a note from a doctor stating you need the pass will be required for renewal. Drivers will also cary a card matching the driver to placard. The new law is meant to reduce fraud and abuse of the system and to protect the spaces for those that truly need them. Around a half million people in New Jersey use the system.

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 1,000 years this afternoon. Castro plead guilty last week to 937 counts in a deal to avoid a death sentence. Those charges included kidnapping, aggravated murder, rape and assault. Castro kidnapped Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight, and Gena DeJesus between August 2002 and April 2004. They were held captive until May 6 when Berry kicked through the front door of his house.
