NFL Concussions Case, Christie Gets Another Dem Nod, Pine Hill Felony Murder Charges

The NFL and former players must try to negotiate a dispute over whether complaints about concussion-related injuries belong in court or in arbitration, a federal judge said Monday. U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody of Philadelphia had planned to rule July 22 in a legal fight that involves about 4,200 former players and could be worth billions of dollars. But instead she ordered the two sides to begin mediation with retired federal Judge Layn Phillips. The retirees want the right to sue the league, while the NFL insists the claims must be arbitrated under terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Gov. Chris Christie has picked up another Democratic endorsement for re-election — this time from the former executive director of the Black Ministers Council of New Jersey. Bishop Reginald Jackson was joined Monday by 10 members of the state’s black clergy community. Jackson is the former executive director of the Black Ministers Council, which represents more than 600 churches in the state.

Felony murder charges have been filed against a Philadelphia man who allegedly broke into the southern New Jersey home of his estranged wife’s boyfriend and fatally stabbed him. Police captured 29-year-old Stefan Curry-Burkett near The Greens at Pine Hill apartment complex, where the attack occurred around 4:50 a.m. Monday. Curry-Burkett got access to Michael Cogan’s apartment by climbing onto a balcony and entering through a sliding glass door, assaulting the 26-year-old and stabbing him repeatedly.
